On October 18th, Norwich Nursery school families gathered at Huntley Meadows for the 3rd annual Blooma- thon, a sponsorship event to benefit the school’s scholarship program. Each year, with the help of siblings and parents, the children plant 1,000 daffodil bulbs at Huntley Meadows. Over $3,000 was raised this year for the NNS scholarship program through generous donations from families, friends & local businesses. This year the bulbs were planted on the south-facing bank around the trees between the two staircases. As the early morning fog burned off, more than 25 families tackled the slope with trowels and shovels warming themselves with the sun, play and hard work. With the added bonus of soil preparation by the Town of Norwich (thank you Justin!), the 1,000 bulbs were all planted within an hour’s time. It was a wonderful time for the school to come together as a community while giving back to the larger community by beautifying the local playing fields. The morning ended with a potluck lunch that was mostly desserts—the best kind of potluck!—and playtime at the playground. Three years ago, Amy Neuman, a NNS parent in charge of fundraising when her youngest was attending the school, conceived the idea of the Bloom-a-thon. Looking for a way to raise the necessary scholarship funds without selling the usual “stuff,” the Bloom-a-thon seemed like a terrific solution to accomplish the fundraising goal while being green and community-minded. She has subsequently co-founded the non-profit Inspiring Kids, Inc. For more pictures of the event or more information, check out www.norwichnurseryschool.org. Enjoy all the blooms in the spring! |
